Green Schools Newsletter No. 3 Hi everyone. The pupils and staff of San Carlo Junior school have been very busy with our Green Schools campaign. Just after Christmas the pupils made bird feeders as part of a competition, and there was a huge response. In all 145 fantastic birdfeeders were made and the Green Schools Committee had a difficult job to pick the winning entries. It was decided, because of the high quality of the birdfeeders, to award two first prizes to each class and to have smaller prizes for all the other entries. On Friday 6 th of February we held a Green Day. The pupils were encouraged to wear green so that they can be seen to be green. They also helped to tidy up the school and it’s surrounding area. The birdfeeders were put on display on the trees surrounding the school. The pupils also planted primroses and lavender shrubs. Our school looks fabulous. As part of the initiative to acquire our first Green Flag Bernie Brennan and Tony O Sullivan from Leixlip Tidy Towns came to speak to the children about the importance of keeping Leixlip tidy. We all learnt a lot from this talk. The children will undertake a poster competition later this year which is aimed at increasing their awareness of the importance of recycling. The initiative is all about making children environmentally aware and getting them more engaged. We are finding that the pupils are really enthusiastic and are asking lots of questions. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Green School Committee and all pupils and staff for their wonderful efforts. Keep up the good work. C. Diggins. Principal.
